Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – St. Louis MO Workers Comp Lawyers

Our attorneys help St. Louis employees diagnosed with work-related Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve provides sensation to the palm side of the thumb, index fingers, and middle fingers, as well as other muscles in the hand that allow the thumb and fingers to move.

The carpal tunnel is a narrow pathway of bones and ligaments located at the base of the hand which houses the median nerve and tendons. When the tendons become irritated from repeated use or traumatic injury the carpal tunnel narrows and swells, causing the median nerve to become compressed. The result may be pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, or an itching sensation in the hand and wrist, sometimes radiating up the arm.

What Are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Symptoms of CTS typically begin gradually over time due to repeated use of the hand and wrist or due to the combined effect of work related injuries. Early symptoms include numbness, burning and tingling sensations in the palm of the hand and fingers, particularly the thumb and index and middle fingers. These early symptoms often appear in one or both hands and are most apparent during the night. As the symptoms progress, people may begin to feel tingling sensations during the day. Ultimately, CTS results in decreased grip strength, which may make it difficult to grasp objects or perform other manual tasks both at work and at home.

What Are the Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

We have seen St. Louis workers with CTS caused by a number of different factors which create pressure on the median nerve and tendons in the carpal tunnel. One of the largest contributing factors is a person's congenital predisposition, simply meaning that some people are born with a smaller carpal tunnel. Other factors include injury or trauma to the wrist, mechanical problems in the wrist joint, work-related stresses, repeated use of hand tools and other repetitive hand and wrist actions.

CTS is most common in workers performing assembly line work and other repetitive physical tasks. Some examples include mechanics, maintenance and repair workers, electricians, manufacturing and finishing workers, cleaning workers, packagers and others.
