Law Enforcement Officer Employment Law

The Law Offices of Kevin J. Dolley represents law enforcement officers, police officers, and corrections officers in a variety of legal proceedings related to their employment. The Firm has experience handling legal issues specific to law enforcement, including use of force, internal investigations, and collective bargaining.

Time-Sensitive Incidents

For critical incidents involving the use of force and other time-sensitive matters, Attorney Kevin Dolley is always available, including at night and on weekends. His cell phone number is (314) 749-1846.

Dedicated Representation of Law Enforcement Officers

The Firm has experience handling:

  • Internal Affairs / Use of Force Complaints;
  • POST complaints and disciplinary matters;
  • Public safety employees involved in administrative investigations;
  • Work-related injuries;
  • Contract development and enforcement;
  • Law enforcement officer criminal defense;
  • Law enforcement labor negotiations and collective bargaining, including representation at "meet and confer" sessions, and assistance with contract grievance and contract development.

Internal Disciplinary Matters

Missouri law affords law enforcement officers the right to a meeting regarding dismissals, demotions, and suspensions within 48 hours. Officers also have the right to an attorney during internal investigations. Time is of the essence in these situations and the results of these meetings can impact officers’ licenses, careers, and freedom. Officers faced with these situations need experienced, vigorous representation from an attorney with knowledge of legal issues unique to law enforcement officers. If you are a police officer under internal investigation or facing discipline, contact the Law Offices of Kevin J. Dolley today at (314) 645-4100 or kevin@dolleylaw.com.

Proven Success

We recovered $775,000 on behalf of our client in Daugherty v. City of Maryland Heights, which was appealed all the way to the Missouri Supreme Court. The case was brought under the Missouri Human Rights Act (MHRA) on behalf of a 59 year-old former police captain with the City of Maryland Heights alleging discrimination on the basis of age and disability. The Law Offices of Kevin J. Dolley successfully argued the case before the Missouri Supreme Court.

The Firm’s record also includes establishing the constitutional right of police officers to collectively bargain in Missouri in the case of Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 15 v. City of Jennings, St. Louis County, Judge Vincent (August 2008). This case successfully established the constitutional right to collective bargaining for police officers and obtained the first collective bargaining framework under the Missouri constitutional standard for collective bargaining.
